I was paddleboarding yesterday, and below us, sea turtles glided beneath us (I am in Hawaii visiting a friend; I know, lucky me). The way sea turtles swim makes them look like they are flying underwater. The magic of that caught my breath. I’m usually quick with my camera, but I was too stunned to reach for it. My friend Christine got a great photo though (I’ll include it here with her permission).
As soon as we got back to her condo, I researched sea turtles, and specifically, the one we saw. From her picture, I determined that it was an endangered green sea turtle. I found out that they return to their birthplace to mate and lay eggs, sometimes traveling up to 1,600 miles. I learned that they reach sexual maturity at 20-50 years, but that only 1 percent make it that far. I also learned that healthy sea turtles can live 80-100 years in the wild. 100 years!
